What are the options?

1

Another employee within the company takes over the lease bike

One of the colleagues takes over the current lease contract so that the outstanding term of the contract continues. This is free of charge for employee and employer. The colleague who takes over the contract can eventually take over the lease bike. Send an email to [email protected] with the name of the colleague who wishes to take over the bike, and we will arrange this for you.

2

Take the bike leasing contract to a new employer

When an employee leaves employment, it is also possible to take the lease contract to the new employer. This is free of charge for all parties. Send an email to [email protected] with the details of your new employer and we will arrange this for you.

3

End the leasing contract: take over the bike

You can use the calculation tool below to calculate your early termination fee.

4

End the leasing contract: without taking over the bike

With the calculation tool below you can calculate your early termination fee. If you don't want to take over the bike we ask you to return it. This is easy, via our second-hand platform Bike Selection we will pick up the bike at your home, your office or bike store. At the end of the contract we will make an appointment with you.

Frequently Asked Questions?

How does the calculation work?

At Lease a Bike, we love people and we love bikes. That's why we offer the best early termination conditions on the market if you need to terminate your lease contract for a valid reason. There are no hidden costs or small print, and we communicate our calculations and conditions clearly and transparently.

Lease contract started after 1/1/2023 and already active for more than 12 months

If you have a valid reason for early termination, you can return the bike:

  • Free of charge if you do not wish to take ownership of it. We do not recommend this because you will lose all the amounts you have already paid, which would be a shame.
  • Purchase it at a very favorable price and continue riding your dream bike. You will then pay no more than the current market price (or the remaining lease amounts if that amount is less), which is always much cheaper than buying a new bike.

If you do not have a valid reason for early termination, you can only terminate the lease contract by paying the remaining lease amounts for the bike in full.

Lease contract started after 1/1/2023 and active for less than 12 months

If you have a valid reason for early termination, you can return the bicycle:

  • If you do not wish to take ownership of it. You will then pay the remaining lease amounts for up to 12 months. If, for example, your contract only has 7 months left, you will pay for the remaining 5 months.
  • Purchase it at a discount and continue riding your dream bike. You will never pay more than the current market price of the bike (or the remaining lease payments if that amount is less), which is always much cheaper than buying a new bike.

If you do not have a valid reason for early termination, you can only terminate the lease contract by paying the remaining lease amounts for the bike in full.

If you have a lease contract that was drawn up in 2022 or earlier, the old conditions still apply (which did not take into account whether or not you had a valid reason to terminate the contract and which still apply at most other bicycle leasing companies in Belgium). You will then pay the remaining lease payments (excluding maintenance and insurance costs).

For all lease contracts that started after June 2, 2025, and are terminated early without valid reason:

If your contract has been active for less than 12 months and you do not wish to take over the bicycle:

  • You will pay the remaining lease amounts up to 12 months + an administrative fee of €175. If your contract has only 7 months left, for example, you will pay the remaining 5 months.

If your contract has been active for more than 12 months and you do not wish to take over the bicycle:

  • You will only pay an administrative fee of €175.
What are valid reasons to terminate the contract early?

If something happens in your career that forces you to terminate your bike lease “against your will” earlier than the agreed period of 36 months, we fully understand. We consider the following to be valid reasons:

  • Termination of employment contract by employer (dismissal)
  • Termination of employment contract by employee
  • Long-term illness (more than 3 months)
  • Pregnancy
How is the amount settled?

The final settlement is invoiced to the employer, who can then pass it on to the employee e.g. via outstanding holidays or 13th month.

Can I also take over the lease contract privately?

Unfortunately, Private Lease is not an option and only the above options are available to terminate the lease contract before its end date.

Will the service & insurance component also be discontinued or will it still continue until month 36?

As soon as your lease contract is terminated, your service & insurance also stops. From this date, you are no longer insured against damage or theft. You can also no longer have maintenance carried out. We recommend insuring your own bike and maintaining it properly for years of cycling pleasure.

Can the early termination costs be settled through the employees' gross salary or is this net?

When the lease is terminated, the costs can only be settled with the employee as a net cost. It is no longer possible to offset it against the gross salary because the tax benefit also expires when the lease is terminated.

Can the employee have another service carried out before the lease is terminated and the bike becomes property of the employee?

Of course you may, just make sure that this is done before the specified date when the lease is terminated. After that, it is in fact no longer possible.

Can the costs of early termination also be paid in installments?

Unfortunately, this is not possible.

How is the takeover price calculated at Lease a Bike?

You can always terminate the lease contract and purchase the bike. The costs will never exceed the lease price x the remaining number of months or the current market price. At Lease a Bike, the lowest price applies as the takeover price. With other leasing companies, you pay the remaining months in one go without the tax benefit.

Calculation example 1:

You have an electric bike that costs €4,400 with a monthly net lease price of €56. If you terminate after 10 months, you lose the tax benefit and with other leasing companies you pay €164 x 26 months + residual value = approximately €5,000. With Lease a Bike, you pay €3,666.

Calculation example 2:

You have a speed pedelec that costs €5,900 with a monthly net lease price of €72. If you terminate the lease after 6 months, you lose the tax benefit and pay €216 x 30 months + residual value = approximately €7,365 with other leasing companies. With Lease a Bike, you pay €5,310.

Calculation example 3:

You have a city bike that costs €1,500 with a monthly net lease price of €22. If you terminate the lease after 20 months, you lose the tax benefit and pay €64 x 6 months + residual value = approximately €1,250 with other leasing companies. With Lease a Bike, you pay €1,000.
